The Issue

I, like many others, have been a part of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) system and have felt the tremendous strain of attempting to complete complicated calculations under timed conditions. Not all of us have the speed needed for arithmetic calculations. In more than one instance, CBSE’s assertion of incorporating simpler values in exams has been found wanting. It seems counterproductive to invest precious examination minutes on calculations we've executed countless times, especially at a time when calculators are a ubiquitous part of life. The prime focus should be on the conceptual understanding of subjects, an objective which is regrettably sidetracked by the extensive arithmetic involved.

A disquieting question remains: when so many state boards have paved the way for the use of calculators, doesn't the exclusion of the same for CBSE students put them in a disadvantageous position? Simplifying the calculation aspect will not just significantly reduce the stress involved but also help in assessing a student's true understanding of topics.

In light of these reasons, it is apparent that Class 11 and 12 students benefit greatly from the provision of calculators in exams. This change is not just beneficial—it is necessary. It is time for CBSE to follow the path set by other boards and consider the well-being of its students in a comprehensive manner. I call on all of you to lend your support and sign this petition to encourage CBSE to permit the use of simple calculators during exams for Class 11 and 12 students.
