These last two years I have homeschooled my children because we wanted to individualize their learning journeys to curate a specific education plan based on their needs, interests, and strengths. However, as they grow older, we are noticing a gap in their ability to remain part of the community: there is a lack of extracurricular activities and sports programs available to them that are easily accessible without attending a public or private school. In these formative years building character, a love for community, maintaining life long friendships and gaining education is valuable. 

State Bill 401 provides a wonderful solution to this issue by allowing homeschool students, like my children, to participate in UIL (University Interscholastic League) activities. This would grant them the opportunity to engage in sports and other activities alongside their peers they've grown up with. Allowing this participation is not just a chance for fun and physical exercise, but also a critical aspect of their social development and community connection. 

Columbia-Brazoria Independent School District has the power to opt into this bill and make a significant difference in the lives of many students in our community whose families have chosen alternative education paths. By saying "yes" to State Bill 401, CBISD can ensure equitable opportunities for all students, including those educated at home, to compete, learn, and grow through UIL's diverse extracurricular programs.

The integration of homeschool students in UIL activities promotes inclusivity and a deep sense of community, reflecting the broader ideals of freedom that we strive to foster. With affirmative action from the CBISD school board, we can bridge the gap between different educational approaches and create a more integrated, supportive environment for all children. SB 401 does not require homeschool students to pass state standardized tests, like public school students; however, it does require homeschool parents to submit grades based on their specific curriculum. Funding is available to CBISD per homeschool student they allow to participate in UIL activities.

I encourage the CBISD school board members to vote yes to opting into State Bill 401. By doing so, they allow homeschool children the chance to thrive both academically and socially. Please support this cause to open doors and offer equal opportunities to all students in our district. By signing this, you are only voting in favor of the board opting in to SB401.
