Urge Canada to provide sanctuary for trans migrants

Urge Canada to provide sanctuary for trans migrants
The Issue
Across the globe, trans people are being criminalized, erased, and hunted. From Uganda to the United States, Belarus to Iran, trans migrants are fleeing forced detransition, surveillance, and state violence. Canada has the power—and the moral obligation—to rise as a lifeboat. A lifeboat that stands firm against the tides of repression and violence, offering a beacon of hope to those in dire need.
Imagine being forced to flee your home country because of who you are, left with no choice but to seek refuge elsewhere. For many trans individuals, this is not just a possibility, but a stark reality. In countries like Uganda where anti-LGBTQ+ laws are stringent, or in regions besieged by political unrest such as Belarus, trans individuals face persecution, violence, and even death. The United Nations, in multiple reports, has highlighted the extreme dangers faced by LGBTQ+ communities worldwide, documenting countless instances of discrimination and abuse.
Yet, amidst these harrowing reports, Canada stands out as a nation with a proud tradition of defending human rights. In 2017, Canada was applauded for its inclusivity, when it introduced landmark legislation acknowledging and protecting gender identity and expression. Now, at this crucial juncture, we call upon the Canadian government to extend this spirit of acceptance and protection beyond its borders.
By establishing a dedicated program to support and expedite the acceptance of trans migrants seeking asylum, Canada can become the Israel of trans migrants: a sanctuary forged in hope, resilience, and legacy. Building partnerships with international human rights organizations, increasing funding for immigration services, and initiating awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the plight of trans migrants, are essential steps that need immediate attention.
As Canadians, it is our duty to not just welcome diversity, but to act boldly in the face of injustice. To our government leaders, we urge you to act swiftly and decisively. Make Canada a beacon for the world, one that not only honors our commitments to human rights, but embodies them, transforming those commitments into compassionate action.
We, therefore, call upon Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Canadian government to forge a pathway for trans migrants seeking sanctuary, ensuring their safety and preserving their dignity. In your hands lies the power to save lives, to make a difference, and to lead by example. Kindly sign and support this petition to urgently call for the creation and implementation of this vital program. Let us together ensure Canada stands unequivocally as a global leader in human rights for all.
