The Issue

In 2005, I spearheaded a significant campaign to ensure that poverty issues were recognized and addressed within the California Democratic Party platform. It was a pivotal moment for me and for countless others who believe that every individual deserves a chance for a better life, free from the constraints of poverty. Over the years, we've made substantial progress, shining a light on the struggles faced by low-income communities and advocating for meaningful change.

Recently, I was disheartened to learn that the California Democratic Party has removed the "Poverty Elimination" from the "Labor, Economic Justice and Poverty Elimination" plank from its draft platform. This is not just a bureaucratic decision; it's a move that threatens to make low-income communities invisible once more within our political discourse. It's crucial to remember that California has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation, affecting millions of its residents. A 2023 report indicated that about 5.6 million Californians, including 1.6 million children, live in poverty. Ignoring these numbers does a disservice to our state and its people.

Removing "Poverty Elimination" from the platform signals a dangerous disregard for those who rely on these policies to uplift their lives. Our state, known for its progressivism, should be at the forefront of tackling the root causes of poverty rather than sidelining them.

By restoring "Poverty Elimination" to the Democratic Party platform, we can ensure that our policies actively work towards reducing economic inequality and promoting opportunities for all Californians.

We need your support to persuade the California Democratic Party to reaffirm its commitment to poverty eradication and not turn its back on vulnerable communities. Stand with us in this crucial fight and make your voice heard.

Please sign this petition to urge the California Democratic Party to reincorporate "Poverty Elimination" in its "Labor, Economic Justice and Poverty Elimination" platform. Together, we can advocate for a future where every Californian has the opportunity to thrive.
