Urge BHA and Government to Reconsider Sunday Night Racing Decisions

Urge BHA and Government to Reconsider Sunday Night Racing Decisions
The Issue
I am a lifelong participant in the world of horse racing. It's not just a job, it's a passion that requires dedication, hard work, and an unwavering love for horses. Traditionally, those of us who care for these magnificent animals - the grooms, lads and other stable staff - have had every other afternoon and Sundays off. Many of us start our days at 5am and also cover evening meetings. The recent decision by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and Government to introduce Sunday night racing has put additional strain on an already demanding schedule.
This decision was made without consulting those it would most impact – the horse racing staff. The potential detrimental effects on our family life and mental health were not considered. Moreover, while there is an additional expense payment of £150 per member of staff for racing on Sundays, this is subject to tax deductions leaving only £100 net or even less due to loopholes allowing trainers not to pay it.
The introduction of Sunday night races also puts pressure on minimal Sunday staff at home who are already stretched thin due to rotational duties.
We urge BHA and Government officials to reconsider their decision about Sunday night races taking into account its impact on stable staff’s well-being as well as financial implications due to inadequate compensation measures in place.
Please sign this petition if you believe in fair treatment for all workers including those in horse racing industry whose dedication often goes unnoticed but is crucial for the sport we all love so much.
