Good morning from Idaho!
The weather is finally starting to warm up here, and so is the desire for positive change in the tech industry's landscape. I hope this message finds you in the absolute greatest of conditions and ready to help make iPhone better for all who come!
A lot has happened since we last talked, some for the better and some for the worse. March 6 marked the signing of the Digital Markets Act in the European Union, and one day earlier, the release of iOS 17.4. This means that European Union customers now have access to the features we are requesting. Apple is still making it hard on developers and traveling EU residents to make sure that their App Store is still the best option and that outside consumers cannot access this feature.
First, you cannot spoof your location. Apple is using many factors, such as Apple ID setup location, carrier location, Bluetooth, GPS tracking and Wi-Fi to ensure that only EU residents are able to sideload apps. This is just one layer of their plot to make sure their walled garden approach stays active.
Next, Apple has implemented charges and restrictions to scare developers into avoiding these new policies. Apple is doing everything in its power to sabotage these new freedoms for anyone outside the EU. They're adding short grace periods for sideloaded apps, making developers jump through hoops, and will probably bombard users with scary security pop-ups to discourage sideloading.
I cannot stress this enough: although it still sometimes seems like all hope is lost, we still have a fighting chance! We are only 8 supporters away from our first goal of 50 signatures! Tim Cook will not give up easy, and chances are he'll probably find another way to work around any laws that might come their way, but loopholes don't leave room for consumer rights and freedom of choice. A social media post can go such a long way, and is crucial to our success. Share this petition with people you know, on networks like Facebook, X, Snapchat, and Instagram. Don't wait--let's hold Apple accountable and help make iOS better for everyone!
