Urge Airlines & USDOT to Restore Direct Routes from Houghton to SE Michigan & Minneapolis

The Issue

We are calling on airlines and the US Department of Transportation to recognize the urgent need for a direct flight route from Houghton, Michigan (CMX) to Southeast Michigan (DTW or FNT) and Minneapolis (MSP). This appeal comes from the heart of the MTU community, particularly the parents and families of the approximately 7,000 students attending Michigan Technological University, located in Houghton, which has a population of around 8,500 residents.

Every semester break, countless students face the daunting task of making an 8+ hour drive through hazardous winter conditions. The remote roads and severe weather, especially in the winter months, make this drive not only exhausting but perilous. This journey results in multiple accidents each year, some tragically leading to student fatalities.

Many students struggle with feelings of isolation, unable to attend family gatherings, support loved ones during difficult times, or simply return home without undertaking a grueling trip. For families, the inability to visit their student adds to the emotional toll. A direct flight option would transform this experience, making it safer and more convenient for students and their families alike.

Currently, there are 12 flights per week by SkyWest between CMX and Chicago (ORD). This route has been unprofitable, leading SkyWest to file notice of intent to terminate services and subsequent Essential Air Service subsidies. This route is not useful to students and their families in lower Michigan. Demand has increased since this was last trialed. Restoring the direct route to DTW, and other preferred connection cities like MSP, would provide additional opportunity for profit, alongside safe, efficient transportation for Huskies and community members.

We urge the US Department of Transportation and airlines, such as United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, SkyWest Airlines, and Allegiant Air, to take action and address this pressing need. By establishing a direct flight route from Detroit to Houghton, we can prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and families. Let’s work together to prevent further tragedies and ensure that every student at Michigan Tech has the opportunity to connect with their loved ones safely.

Sign this petition to demonstrate the demand for routes from CMX to DTW and MSP, and advocate for a safer travel option and to support students and families in Michigan.

*Thanks for the support! There is no need for donations to the petition at this point; just share with those who care about your Husky! If you feel motivated to donate, please consider donating to the Husky Emergency Assistance Fund to support students facing adversities.
