La causa

The world is rapidly moving towards digitalization, yet the International Driving Permit (IDP) remains an outdated paper document. As someone who frequently travels across borders for both professional and personal reasons, the cumbersome reality of handling paper permits creates unnecessary challenges. In today's era of technological advancements, it is time for the United Nations and the International Federation of Automobiles (FIA) to lead the transition towards a digital IDP that is secure, efficient, and universally accepted.

The current paper-based IDP is not only prone to wear and tear, but it is also vulnerable to loss or fraudulent activity. Reports have shown that fake or altered paper permits circulate on the black market, compromising the safety and security of international roads. A digital IDP could significantly mitigate these risks by integrating enhanced security features like encryption and authentication, ensuring that only legitimate drivers are issued these permits.

Digital IDPs would harmonize with existing digital ecosystems, such as digital passports and IDs, making international travel more seamless. Imagine arriving at a car rental service abroad and simply scanning your digital IDP on your smartphone. This process would not only save time but would also align with global efforts to reduce paper usage, contributing to environmental sustainability.

Countries like Australia and the United Kingdom have made progressive strides toward adopting digital driver's licenses. The United Nations and FIA should take inspiration from these models and work together with governments and industry leaders to design and implement a robust digital IDP. This upgrade will not only modernize international travel but will also enforce global road safety standards.

We must advocate for a future where barriers to global mobility are minimized, and security is maximized. By signing this petition, you are urging the United Nations and FIA to prioritize the development of a secure digital standard for the International Driving Permit. This change is overdue and essential for both safety and convenience in our increasingly interconnected world.

In the 21st century, an era defined by Artificial Intelligence, advanced cryptography, and secure QR codes, travelers worldwide are still forced to obtain and carry a physical cardboard booklet designed under UN Conventions from 1949 and 1968 just to drive abroad.
Maintaining the International Driving Permit (IDP) in this archaic paper format is no longer a safety measure; it is a global bureaucratic absurdity that fuels two major international problems:

1.- It fosters a massive market for online scams: Due to the complete absence of an official, centralized digital alternative, dozens of private companies exploit tourists' confusion by selling useless "virtual international licenses" or "digital translation apps." Travelers pay for these documents believing they are legitimate, only to face rejection by local police and car rental companies abroad, leaving them legally unprotected, fined, and stranded.
2.-It sustains an obsolete private monopoly: The UN delegated the issuance of this document to the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and its affiliated national clubs (such as AAA in the US, RACE in Spain, or ANA/AMA in Mexico). These non-governmental organizations charge excessive annual fees simply to print a paper leaflet and attach a photo. Generating millions of dollars in private revenue gives these clubs a massive economic incentive to lobby against any technological modernization.

OUR DEMAND:
We call on the UNECE (United Nations), the FIA, and global transport authorities to permanently phase out the printed booklet and establish an official Electronic International Driving Permit (e-IDP) standard. National driving licenses must be verifiable globally via a unique, secure QR code or interconnected international databases.
It is time to protect global citizens, end paper monopolies, eradicate digital scams, and modernize world transit! #DigitalIDP #EcoTravel
