Update Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to Lift People with Disabilities out of Poverty

Update Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to Lift People with Disabilities out of Poverty
The Issue
As individuals living with disabilities and special needs, we have a firsthand experience of the difficulties faced by many who depend on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to meet their basic needs. SSI has been a financial lifeline for us and for many like us, funding vital food and clothing expenses. However, it was last updated 40 years ago and is no longer adequate for the needs of today. Our vulnerabilities are multiplied by an outdated asset limit and marriage penalty entrenched in the system, pushing us towards the poverty line rather than lifting us from it.
More so, people with disabilities are five times more likely to experience domestic violence. Many of has endure this silently, too because the fear of homelessness looms large and many shelters are not equipped to handle our special needs. We live in constant fear and uncertainty, burdening our families and caretakers while that shouldn't be the case.
There is ample data indicating that by updating the asset limit or eliminating it and by upgrading our income, it will not only better our individual lives but also contribute positively to the economy. It's high time our policy makers considered this necessary change and updated SSI to meet current needs.
Let’s unite in this fight for an inclusive society where everyone, irrespective of their physical conditions, can lead a dignified life free from avoidable struggles. We are not asking for more than we need; we’re asking for enough to survive. Sign this petition to call for the much-needed update of SSI. Let us all stand together to ensure a future without fear of poverty or homelessness for people with disabilities and special needs.
