Unrestricted Chicken Ownership in Candler County, GA

The Issue

The proposed ordinances in Candler County, GA are attempting to limit the freedom of residents to own chickens by implementing constraints, such as only permitted for those on more than 2 acres of land, 8 hens with one hen per additional acre & no roosters. The coop must be at least 50 ft from property lines & 250 ft from the home, with a 4 ft tall solid fence around the back & side of the run, which makes it nearly impossible for those even with the minimum land requirements. Culling or butchering for any reason are also prohibited; similar ordinances are being implemented in surrounding counties, such as Effingham & Bulloch County.

Chickens play an essential role in maintaining a sustainable lifestyle by providing fresh eggs and natural pest control. Moreover, they contribute to the local economy as well. According to the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA), Georgia is one of the top poultry producers in the country.

Despite these benefits, our county's regulations restrict chicken ownership which not only impacts individual rights but also hinders potential economic growth locally.

We urge our local officials to reconsider these restrictions and allow residents like myself who have ample space for these birds to raise them without limitations. By doing so, we can promote sustainability while respecting individual freedoms.
