In cities across the country, federal immigration agents are now conducting raids and arrests with their faces fully covered—wearing balaclavas, sunglasses, and pulled-up gaiters that hide their identities from the people they’re detaining and from the public.

Accountability starts with visibility. If federal agents can cover their faces, how can we report abuse? How do you face your accuser? How do communities trust—or even identify—the people tasked with enforcing the law?

The Trump administration defends the practice, saying it’s to protect agents from harassment. But when law enforcement officers are empowered to detain people without warrants, often in workplaces, clinics, and neighborhoods—and they do so with no visible ID and no face to recognize—we lose a fundamental protection: the right to know who holds power over us.

We’re calling on the Department of Homeland Security and Congress to immediately prohibit the use of facial coverings by ICE and CBP agents during public operations and require all officers to display visible ID at all times.

Unmask ICE. Because the people who enforce the law should never be allowed to hide from it.
