I am excited to report that an independent nonprofit monkey sanctuary, Primates Incorporated (PRIMATES), has opened in Wisconsin near UW-Madison! PRIMATES is dedicated to optimizing the lives of monkeys retired from research facilities. Izzie, Mars, and River, the first monkeys to arrive at PRIMATES, had been confined to a small barren cage in a research facility for years. Now the three are enjoying retirement in dignity, lavished with the care, space and kindness they so deeply deserve. Two more monkeys, Batman and Timon, have recently arrived from yet another laboratory. Sadly, monkeys who are unable to access a sanctuary such as PRIMATES are re-used in research or ultimately euthanized. The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) prevailed in its lawsuit against the University of Wisconsin-Madison! Following a successful appeal by ALDF to the Wisconsin 4th District Court of Appeal, the university was ordered to release the research committee's records concerning the abusive experiments on infant monkeys. As you remember, UW had intentionally withheld key information in the record from ALDF and public scrutiny. ALDF is presently reviewing the material to determine if UW deviated from standard protocol in order to get the study approved and allow the unethical infant monkey experimentation to go forward.
