Thanks in part to your untiring support, Congress has asked the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to re-evaluate its ethical justification for using monkeys in government-funded experiments. Although a move in the right direction, the sad reality is that NIH’s review will only add another bureaucratic layer of paperwork without any meaningful change. The next step in our campaign will cast a much wider net. We will redirect our attention and petition those key federal lawmakers who control the purse strings to NIH. We will ask them to stop sending our hard-earned tax dollars to laboratories such as the University of Wisconsin’s that exploit, manipulate, sicken, and poison monkeys but arguably contribute little to advancing our health. Without our lucrative tax dollars, the lion’s share of these experiments will come to an end as there is no interest by the private investors to finance costly studies of questionable merit. A number of lawmakers have already added their voices and contributed to our momentum. They are challenging the reckless funding of these experiments; they sense that much of the testing is unjustified and bad science. Given our mounting national debt, it is imperative that Congress act responsibly to curb wasteful spending.
