Closing in on 30k signatures // next steps!
Jul 20, 2021 —
As my petition to change UW policy to allow all students to feel represented by their diplomas closes in on 30,000 signatures, I am so grateful for all of the support. The petition has been shared over 2,000 times and has garnered some media attention -- including this article by the UW Daily and this brief snippet on the local NPR station.
I want to underscore that there is no state or federal law barring allowing trans and other students to have our chosen names on our diplomas and this is already a common practice at many other universities, including Western Washington University.
I am also grateful to the incoming chair of UW's faculty senate, who has offered to meet with me tomorrow to discuss the issue and process for changing this policy. Hopefully I will have a positive update following that meeting!
Thank you for all of your ongoing support -- please keep sharing this petition, especially if you are affiliated with any college or university or are planning to attend UW. Each and every personal comment left on the petition helps illustrate the importance of this policy change!
