Dear Supporter, Since our last update, there has been a flurry of coverage of Southampton University’s anti-Israel conference. Local, national, and Jewish press have all highlighted the sense of anger and outrage over a respectable university promoting an event which will single out Israel in a way that no other country would be. Here are some choice quotes - Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government: “There is a careful line between legitimate academic debate on international law and the actions of governments, and bashing of Israel which often descends into naked anti-Semitism. Douglas Murray, writing in the Daily Express: “You do have to put some effort into putting together such a one-sided hate-fest. The number of people in Britain so utterly and weirdly obsessed by Israel is really quite small. Most ordinary, fair-minded people looking at the Middle East can see that Israel is the only liberal and free society like ours in the region.” Tim Stanley, writing in the Daily Telegraph: “To challenge the right of Israel to exist is, therefore, morally obtuse. It is to forget the flames from which this Phoenix arose. They were the flames of Auschwitz, in to which millions of men, women and children walked and never returned.” Our challenge is to keep raising the profile of Southampton University, so that even if the conference goes ahead, universities will think twice about putting on such one-sided and unfair events in the future. We believe that promoting this petition is one way of doing that, and we hope to reach at least 10,000 signatures by the time of the conference itself. So if you agree with the quotes above.
