If you follow USF on social media, you would have seen they have been recognized as a top school for their global impact on sustainability in 2021 (based on UN sustainability goals) and they illustrated this with a picture from the USF Forest Preserve. Clearly the hypocrisy is lost on them, but not us.
Let’s look at what some of the UN’s sustainability goals are: Take urgent action to combat climate change; Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss; Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all; Disaster risk reduction.
USF’s plan for developing this preserve runs counter to all of these goals.
For Earth Day, let’s reach out to President Currall president@usf.edu) and the Board of Trustees (board@usf.edu) and tell them that destroying or damaging a nature preserve for money is not sustainable.
