URI Students Against Racism and Discrimination

URI Students Against Racism and Discrimination
The Issue
The University of Rhode Island Student Senate--in partnership with the Multicultural Unity and Student Involvement Council (MUSIC), Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Council (Panhel), Club Sports and Intramural Council (CSIC), The American Civil Liberties Union URI (ACLU), and The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), wishes to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims and families of police brutality and violence. The tragic murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and, Ahmaud Abery are just a few of the Americans who are disproportionately killed by police every year.
Together, we recognize the need for change at URI and across our country. We encourage everyone to join us in using our voices and resources to help those who have been marginalized, oppressed, and killed by systematic racism.
No student should ever face discrimination because of their race, gender, sexuality, disability, national origin, religion, or any other aspect of their identity. As students we cannot remain silent while these acts of violence, racism, and hatred continue to plague our country and our community.
We promise to stand up and speak out for justice and equality for all marginalized students in our community, and we hope you will too.
Please stand with us and add your name to this petition to show everyone that our community will always stand up against racism and hate. We all have a role to play in this movement, and we cannot do this without you! So please add your name today, and help us continue to fight for equality for all students. Black Lives Matter!
