Move classes at University of Pennsylania to an online format until at least March 30th.

The Issue

As of March 9th, recent COVID-19 updates have prompted considerable and reasonable concern to the Penn community:

1. Currently, seven coronavirus cases have been discovered in the state of Pennsylvania.

2. In the past few days, neighboring universities such as Columbia University, Harvard University, and Princeton University have taken action to counter coronavirus by moving classes to an online format- some until April 9th and others for the rest of the spring term.

3. The seventh case- one that holds a critical condition- is being treated at the University of Pennsylvania hospital, which is located directly on campus.

By moving classes to an online format, Penn will have a better chance of preventing a rampant spread of the virus amongst the student body. At the same time, Penn should do everything in its ability to make sure that students are entirely accommodated if this transition does occur. This means providing the proper technological means if necessary, or residential accommodations if the administration decides to close campus entirely. While health comes first, no student’s experience should be jeopardized in preventing such.

It is in the best interest of the university and the student body for this action to be taken promptly, as many undergraduates will be returning to the university after various Spring Break travels. Generally speaking, we hope that Penn will disclose definitive information as soon as possible.
