In an unexpected turn of events, last week the Sultan of Brunei handed back his honorary degree to the University of Oxford.(1) While the University did not act in time to revoke the degree, the international pressure upon the Sultan undoubtedly had an impact upon his decision. We would therefore like to thank you all for your support!
Despite this, we are conscious that the Sultan's actions mean that the University no longer has to make a decision. This was a 'get out of jail free card' to a large extent. We are concerned about the amount of time the University has taken not to act, and are saddened that they failed to state their position on this issue in time. It is hard not to be suspicious of internal procedures which have conveniently postponed a decision for months, allowing media attention on the University to die down and the Sultan to act first.
This campaign sought to press the University of Oxford to demonstrate their support for human rights through revoking the Sultan of Brunei's honorary degree. It would seem that the University has dodged making a political statement just in time. Therefore, although this campaign has served its purpose, we are not fully satisfied.
Neutrality is the worst form of complicity, and we sincerely hope that the University of Oxford will come to realise the importance of timely and decisive action.
Thank you again for all of your help and support. Let us all continue to champion the human rights of all individuals, and be active and outspoken in fighting all forms of hate.
