A day of progress and protests!

Oxford, ENG, United Kingdom

Apr 6, 2019 —

We are thrilled to announce that the University of Oxford has placed the Sultan of Brunei's honorary degree under consideration! Thank you all for contributing to this and for your continued support as we ask the University to rescind the honour. Please keep using your voices to ensure that the University follows through!

Today:

  • 21 JCR Presidents representing the undergraduate population of Oxford University have signed an open letter calling on the University to rescind the Sultan's degree. Their articulate and powerful letter can be read here: https://bit.ly/2KdotCw
  • Writers of Colour from Media Diversified have also called upon the University to act, demanding that the rights of LGBTQ+ people of colour be respected and defended: https://bit.ly/2I2zJjc More of their brilliant work can be found here: https://bit.ly/2CXIdDW
  • We will be emailing the University our petition tomorrow morning to demand that they rescind the honorary degree.

It is the hard work and combined voices of our supporters which has enabled this campaign to succeed so far. Please continue speaking out for the rights of LGBTQ+ people, people of colour, and Muslims both globally and locally, to ensure that our communities actively elevate the voices of those who need to be heard. We must stand together to make a better world, and challenge prejudice and persecution wherever we see it.
