Reschedule Class of 2020 Commencement at UIUC

Reschedule Class of 2020 Commencement at UIUC
The Issue
The class of 2020 had a rough go from the beginning. An extremely polarizing election, growing fear and xenophobia in the United States, as well as widespread racism and systematic inequality. Our class is comprised of hardworking, dedicated, and extremely bright individuals. As a class, we deserve a commencement ceremony to celebrate our perseverance through these difficult years. Some of us are first generation students, or first generation US citizens; for our parents, this is a celebration of all the sacrifices they made to get us here. Every long night, heartbreak, and loss was meant to lead us here. We as a student body should IMPLORE the university to reconsider. Whether the ceremony is in May or September, we deserve a commencement for the class of 2020. Virtual celebrations or a full cancellation is an insult to a class that’s worked to hard to get here in the face of such adversity. Wait until the pandemic slows down and things get better, then have our commencement. Regalia, ceremony and all. We deserve it, whenever it may be. We’ve already lost the opportunity to say goodbye to our friends and the campus we love so much. Ahletes lost their season. Students lost internship opportunities, jobs, and any sense of normalcy and security. Don’t take graduation away from us too.
