Stop Supporting Animal Cruelty
The Issue
When you first visit the dining website of University of Idaho, you see a statement at the top that reads "By protecting and improving our environment, the communities where we do business and the students we serve, Sodexo makes every day a better day and every tomorrow a better tomorrow." The Humane League was shocked to discover that University of Idaho is actually doing the exact opposite. University of Idaho contracts with Sodexo, a food service company with a dirty secret: Sodexo uses liquid eggs from cruel, filthy, and unsustainable battery cage-farms.
Battery cage farms pack egg-laying hens so tightly into tiny wire cages that they can’t even spread out their wings or engage in any of their natural behaviors.
This archaic practice is so cruel that it is illegal in the entire European Union and several states in the US. Other major companies like Unilever, Delaware North Companies, Burger King, and more have made commitments to phase out the purchasing of all eggs from farms that use this terrible practice. It’s an issue where food service leaders, environmental organizations, food safety organizations, and animal welfare organizations have all been saying one thing – and Sodexo has been doing the opposite.
Why then is the University of Idaho contracting with a hospitality company like Sodexo? By contracting with Sodexo, UI is directly supporting this cruel practice. Please, sign my petition and ask the leadership at University of Idaho to urge Sodexo to end this extreme animal cruelty and completely phase out the use of battery-cage eggs.
