Reinstate admission to the Certified Nurse Midwife Education Program at the University of Florida (UF).

Reinstate admission to the Certified Nurse Midwife Education Program at the University of Florida (UF).
The Issue
It is with great sadness that we must announce that we have learned that the UF College of Nursing has decided to suspend admission to the Certified Nurse Midwifery (CNM) program beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year. We are told that during the coming months the College of Nursing will be evaluating sustainability of the program and it is very likely that admissions will be suspended indefinitely.
UF has the only Certified Nurse Midwife program in the state of Florida and is one of only a few programs in the entire southeastern United States. Terminating this program will have a devastating impact on the profession of nursing and midwifery. It will also drastically impact the health and well being of women and infants in the state of Florida.
Midwives deliver safe pregnancy and women's health care providing low risk women with options in an over-medicalized system.
"Midwifery services are provided in partnership with women and families in diverse settings such as ambulatory care clinics, private offices, community and public health systems, homes, hospitals and birth centers" (ACNM, 2014). By working in diverse settings midwives are able to provide access to care in underserved communities while reducing healthcare spending and improving health outcomes.
Florida currently ranks 3rd in the United States for number of Certified Nurse Midwives. More than 11% of all Florida births are attended by midwives.
"Midwifery is a vital solution to the challenges of providing high-quality maternal and newborn care for all women and newborn infants, in all countries" (Lancet, 2014).
We invite you to contact the Dean of the UF College of Nursing to show your support for saving UF Midwifery!
