Dear Supporters of UVS and Maguire Village,

Looking for something fun to do this Saturday which will also benefit a good cause?  Then come out to GAU's "Save Grad Housing" Block Party at Maguire Village!  It is FREE and open to the public, and goes from 2:00-5:00 p.m on Saturday, June 10th, in the outside quad area near Maguire Village pool just off of SW 34th St.

As background, UF Housing is moving forward with expelling ALL residents from Maguire Village and UVS this summer, only to leave these affordable and beautiful living spaces (348 apartments) empty, with no plans to do anything with the 44 buildings for five years or more.  Moreover, UF has not planned for any replacement housing with remotely similar/affordable rent.  And with rent skyrocketing in Gainesville, removing what few graduate housing spots they have is another financial burden that graduate students and their families do not need right now.

To show solidarity and to remember how Maguire and UVS have hosted tens of thousands of graduate assistants and thousands of parties since their opening in the 1970s, we want to honor them with one final block party.  This Saturday afternoon, there will be live music (from local bands Triple Fault, A Sunroom, Ashra, and A Rainy Night In), games, food, a No Pool Pool Party, and great company.  What is a No Pool Pool Party?  Well, UF Housing has kept Maguire Pool artificially closed since last Fall, despite it being fully functional and continuously maintained, and said that no one can use it.  So we are bringing our own (kiddie) pool with fun water activities planned!  Wear clothes you're comfortable getting wet in (and if you don't want to partake, that's totally fine too!), as well as towels, lawn chairs, and sunscreen. The event is 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. with live music from incredible local musicians, most of them graduate students!  Families and pets are welcome.  Join us for the food, music, the company, and in memory of this space that so many of us call and have called home - you won't want to miss this!
