On Monday, 30 March 2026, the University of Cape Town plans to confer an honorary doctorate on Dr Imtiaz Sooliman — one of the highest endorsements the University can give.

This comes despite widely reported statements attributed to Dr Sooliman that have been described by leading scholars and members of the UCT community as antisemitic and deeply at odds with the University’s stated values of dignity, tolerance, and respect for diversity.

Honorary degrees are not neutral. They signal endorsement.
