Petition updateSupport the New UniversityProtests continue in Amsterdam
Academics for a Free and Democratic University
Feb 26, 2015
As everyone in Amsterdam (and most of the Netherlands) now knows, last night's march protesting the eviction of the students occupying the Humanities faculty culminated in the peaceful occupation of the Maagdenhuis, the University of Amsterdam's official headquarters. After the UvA Executive Board failed to establish a productive dialogue with the students, the mayor of Amsterdam arrived around midnight in an attempt to mediate the discussion, resulting in a lively debate that was broadcast live on local television. This morning, the building remains peacefully occupied, and a full program of activities, debates, and academic lectures from UvA staff members is already under way. As the UvA Executive Board and the Dutch Ministry of Education continue to 'misunderestimate' the extent of staff and students' resentment against its top-down managerial approach, the students need our support more than ever. For those unable to be physically present to support their demand for transparent management and a much more democratic organizational structure, please continue to circulate this petition and call actively on your academic network to demonstrate the academic community's dissatisfaction with the neoliberal university. Our students' actions speak loudly for the necessity to radically re-think the very nature of the university, and it is up to the rest of us to answer this call and engage actively in that debate. Thanks again for your support! Yours in solidarity, Dan Hassler-Forest (Assistant Professor, English Literature) Robin Celikates (Associate Professor, Philosophy) Sina Talachian (Graduate Student, Philosophy)
