Dylan Hernandez died on the campus of SDSU after a fraternity party. A life full of promise ended far too soon. The media have jumped on the fact that he was drunk. The part they are missing is the unsafe bunk bed he was sleeping in, supplied by SDSU in an overly cramped residence hall. The provided safety rail was not nearly tall enough to keep a fully grown student from rolling out of bed. The CPSC guidelines for private sector beds don't have to be followed by residence halls because they "don't sell directly to the consumer". This must change or we will have more deaths like Dylan's and near death/catastrophic injuries like Clark Jacobs of Georgia Tech who suffered a brain injury and stroke from a loft bed fall. As a nation we can do better.
