Very few transit systems operate 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Hence, the law should require them to. Some people work night shifts in major cities, and they have no way of getting there. This is unacceptable, because driving in large urban areas is atrocious, inefficient, and in some cases dangerous. I don't drive yet, but believe me I've learned this the hard way. I just want to make it easier for people to get to work at night. And for commuter rail lines that serve airports I want to make it easier for travelers that arrive at night. Currently, The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the only commuter railroad that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in North America. This is NOT acceptable. In addition, the only light rail/streetcar system I know of that operates 24/7 is SEPTA's Subway-Surface Trolley System. Again, this is completely unacceptable. Even more unacceptable: the only American rapid transit systems that fully operate 24/7 are PATH, PATCO, and the New York City Subway.
