Push Congress to Pass the “Sunshine Protection Act”

The Issue

The Uniform Time Act reformed the nationwide daylight saving time zones and also gave states the option to opt out as long as the entire state stays on the same time zone. In 2018 the state of Florida enacted the Sunshine Protection Act to attempt to join Hawaii and Arizona in removing daylight savings. Florida legislators voted in favor of the act but it awaits approval in congress but currently there is a chance congress does not approve as they believe it would cause confusion.

Day light saving has no real value anymore and Florida's legislators agree as well. States that border the equator do not benefit from daylight saving as it only helps the northern states obtain more sunlight during the winter months.  We would see a increase in tourism if we had that year-round extra hour of sunlight. Studies show that we are more productive when the sun is shining so removing daylight savings would benefit our entire state. We need to make sure that congress approves what Floridians and our legislators have already voted to end.
