Early on in this petition's development, I contacted by telephone Senator John McCaiin's office to see whether I could arrange a meeting with him regarding the issues raised in the petition. I was told to fill out a form and submit it with the problem, which I did. I got no response. I figured that I had caught him at a bad time, when he was caught in the middle of a re-election campaign against Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick. After Senator McCain was re-elected, I started the process all over again. This time I received a form letter telling me that the Senator would keep my views in mind when issues arose on the Senate floor. This was not good enough, obviously, especially when I was seeking to meet with him. So I called his Washington office and relayed the story to the gentleman who answered the telephone. He stated unequivocally that if I received a form letter in response to my request for a meeting with the Senator, the issue must have been concerning an issue which the Senator "simply couldn't get behind." No, I am not kidding. I stated: "So I am to assume that Senator McCain is not concerned of millions of disabled Arizonans and Americans who are disabled by rare diseases and cannot afford their medications?" Apparently realizing what he had said, the gentleman replied, "No, that is not what I said" but by then it was too late. As I learned very early on as a trial lawyer, one cannot toothpaste back into the tube. I, and I suspect plenty of others, will certainly remember this the next time that Senator McCain is up for his next re-election bid.
In the meantime, I have been working very closely with Rep. O'Halloran's office to set up meetings with him (which appears to be no problem) and with the Senate Budget Committee and House Ways and Means Committee, both of which control Social Security and Medicare. Hopefully, I will be going to Washington, DC to present our petition to these Committees and to my own Congressman. I will keep you updated. And, as always, thanks for your support! Susan
