Don't Weaponize the Eucharist: A Plea to the US Catholic Bishops

The Issue

To the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops(USCCB), and to its President, the Most Reverend José H. Gomez:

We, the undersigned, believe that your latest efforts on a "teaching document on the beauty and power of the Eucharist" are a thinly veiled attempt to involve yourselves in US politics, and to damage/disempower liberal/progressive Catholic elected officials and voters, most notably President Joe Biden. These people, with well formed consciences, are merely following the guidance of Pope Benedict XVI in Deus Caritas Est in that "The direct duty to work for a just ordering of society...is proper to the lay faithful"(28a)  referenced on your own blog.

We ask that you put this work on hold, and discern how the USCCB can focus its efforts on driving the agenda of a "Seamless Garment of Life" which includes not only beginning of life issues, but also housing, solidarity, the environment, healthcare, migration, and Preferential Option for the Poor and Economic Justice, and all the issues raised in your document Faithful Citizenship.
