UNESCO: Save Afghanistan's 5000 Year Old Mes Aynak

UNESCO: Save Afghanistan's 5000 Year Old Mes Aynak
The Issue
Mes Aynak in Logar Province, Afghanistan is one of the world's oldest historical Buddhist sites. The ancient monasteries and statues are under threat of destruction from a Chinese company (MCC) which plans to abolish Afghanistan's beautiful Buddhist city, in order to tap into the world's second largest copper deposit. Archaeologists in Afghanistan have been pushing to save their nation's history however, their fight is a fight against time. They cannot overpower MCC nor the corrupt Afghan government without international support. We call for ordinary human beings like you, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation and international governments to help save what is believed to be a site that has the potential to redefine the history of Afghanistan and Buddhism alike.
The Afghan people are now sick of war and invasion. They have been fighting for freedom for nearly four consecutive decades. These people are innocent mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who are merely trying to live their lives. They have fled from war enough, they do not need to be displaced again by the selfish mining company that will rip apart indigenous lands that they call home.
Under this programme:
- 5000 years worth of valuable history will be wiped out
- A mere 25% of the proposed $100 billion in profit will be injected back into the Afghan economy
- There is no outlined plan for the regulation of cash flow, many fear that only high ranking Afghan officials will benefit from any profit
- There are little plans for setting up community projects
- Not enough Afghans are being offered scholarships in China to participate in the programme
- Most employees will be called over from China and capable Afghans who could work on the mine will be disregarded
- MCC is demolishing six villages to make room for the mine
- No offers of compensation have been made for Mes Aynak locals who will be displaced yet again
Solution:
- UNESCO! Recognise Mes Aynak as a World Heritage Site and a World Heritage Site in Danger!
- Watch Qadir Temori's 'Mes Aynak Full Story' on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pY3_jAubHeI
- I will update with demonstration plans outside the Afghan and Chinese embassies in London
- If you are based outside of the UK and are interested in aiding the cause (protests) please contact me
- Spread the word!
Help save Afghanistan. Help save history.
