Stop Trawling & Shark Finning on Africa's Coastlines by The Ocean Planet
The Issue
Ban Shark-finning Internationally - The Ocean Planet
A massive fleet of Chinese trawlers is plundering the already troubled waters of South Africa. Allegedly the transponder beacons go off at night and trawlers come into protected waters and then exit before light! Harvesting ships are near to process the fish and shark fins.
Over 100 million sharks are killed each year, 73 million of which are solely caused by Shark-finning. Shark-finning is the practice of catching a shark, slicing off the live shark's dorsal and sometimes pectoral fins, dumping the shark in the ocean to drown or to be eaten. This is a cruel and wasteful act and needs to be stopped, or sharks will cease to exist in our oceans. Without sharks in our ecosystems, ocean-life will die.
Every year millions of sharks die a slow death on the African coastlines because of shark finning. Finning is the inhumane practice of hacking off the shark’s fins and throwing its still living body back into the sea. The sharks either starve to death, are eaten alive by other fish, or drown (if they are not in constant movement their gills cannot extract oxygen from the water). Shark fins are being “harvested” in ever greater numbers to feed the growing demand for shark fin soup, an Asian “delicacy” and for so called medicinal purposes.
Shark finning is barbaric and considered illegal in some countries, yet they are being slaughter at an unsustainable rate pushing many species to the brink of extinction. Since the 1970s the populations of several species in our waters have been decimated by over 95%. Due to the clandestine nature of finning, records are rarely kept of the numbers of sharks and species caught. African and world governments turn a blind eye within their corrupt bodies and organisations while they are kept silent by Chinese funding and the debt they have created. Officials are bought out by these Chinese thugs in order to continue their disgraceful practices in waters across Africa and the world. Millions of sharks are being sold to shark fin markets in places such as Hong Kong and China.
Chinese & Japanese fishing boats are illegally exploiting Africa's oceans and our governments are doing zero about it. This petition will help us fight our case against governments when it comes to court and assist in the aim to ban shark finning and fishing trawlers from entering African coastlines.
