The ancient Yoruba were amazing people.

The ancient Yoruba proclaimed that at the beginning of time there was no land. There was only the sky above (Orun) and water below (Okun). Then Obatala came down from the sky with a chicken and some soil. He placed the soil on the water and commanded the chicken to spread it which she did. According to this Yoruba theory, that was how land was formed.
The contrasting theory is that of Wegener, a German scientist, who in 1912 proposed the theory that the ancient earth was solid mass of land. Apparently, plates of the land drifted and collided, and this was how water appeared on the surface of the earth. Some other scientists have claimed that water-laden asteroids fell onto the land mass to create the oceans.
Johnson and Wing (2020), comparing oxygen distribution of land and sea (Nat. Geosci. 13, 243–248), confirmed that the ancient earth was a water world, with little to no land in sight. Imagine, the Yoruba theory that preceded the Wegener theory by thousands of years has now been confirmed!
Be a proud Yoruba.
