Call for UN Treaty on Prevention, Reduction and Removal of Plastic in our Environment

0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,000!

This is a call to all the nations of the world to come together and address the issue of plastic pollution in our environment. Though nations, corporations and individuals have started to take action against the use of plastics, more must be done. Approximately 300 millions tons of plastic are generated each year, with more than 8 million tons of that plastic dumped into our oceans [1].

Since the introduction of commercial plastics, we have been unable to live a day without using plastic in some form or other. From plastic bottles to the clothes we wear, we have become addicted to plastic.

This addiction of ours has started to take a toll on our environment and even ourselves. From the poisoning of marine life to decreased fertility in men [2], the effects are beginning to accumulate.

It’s time to break the habit.

The effects of plastic are already well known; from endocrine disrupters to magnets that attract other toxic chemicals [3], it is time that the production of plastics become regulated and are removed from our environment.

It is therefore, that the signatories of this petition are:

Conscious of the effect of plastics and its derivatives on our environment;

Affirming the need for regulations on production and use of plastics;

Believing in the intrinsic value of our environment and the duty to protect it;

Recognizing that plastic pollution is a dire threat to our environment and ourselves;

Understanding the scientific evidence concerning harm caused by plastics on our environment and ourselves;

Conscious of the misuse of plastic and its derivatives and the need for a sustainable use of such plastics;

Affirming the duty to protect the biodiversity and integrity of our worlds ecosystems;

Recognizing the need to preserve our world for future generations;

Bearing in mind the effect of plastic use and production on climate change;

And therefore, call upon the nations of our world to come together to negotiate a treaty that addresses the issue of plastic pollution within our environment.

The pollution from plastics is a worldwide phenomenon that demands international cooperation and action.

Time to act is past overdue.
