What a better way to thank all friends and allies worldwide who stood with Munther and supported this campaign demanding his release. Munther Amira was relased on 6 June and gave an interview shortly after to Rory Truell, IFSW Secretary-General. Please watch and share ! https://youtu.be/aDCC4T-HOzA Rory Truell thoughts after visiting Westbank and interviewing Munther Amira: "It was an honour to talk with Palestinian social worker Munther Amira who was released a few days ago from an Israeli military prison for non-violently protesting to protect children's rights. In the video, Munther describes the importance of the social work approach to non-violent resistance and how advocating for all people's human rights is the essence of the social work profession. His work provides an excellent model for social change not only in the context of the occupation of Palestine but for social workers in all countries. My return to the West Bank involves re-witnessing the treacherous reality of the occupation. The bombings and sniper assassinations are sometimes documented in the world’s media, as is the condemnation by the United Nations, governments and human rights organisations. Yet the day-to-day house demolitions, harassment from settlers and soldiers, the random turning off-and-on water and electricity supplies and dehumanising checkpoints are most-often not brought to the attention of people outside Palestine. The occupation appears to me as a giant octopus suspended over the land, etching its tentacles into every facet of Palestinian life. The invading settlements and expanding walls shred people from their land. Ancient olive trees that Jesus walked amongst are carelessly bulldozed away. Where lush fig, apricot, olive and peach trees once grew now lie empty tear gas cartridges. There is no doubt that the occupation is a constructed strategy aimed at breaking the spirit, culture, economy and dignity of the people it controls. Munther Amira was arrested for challenging one of the occupation’s invasive tentacles - the abuse of children detained by the Israeli military. As a social worker, he felt obligated to advocate for the rights of children, and for this he spent six months in a military prison. He stands along with the great leaders of social change. They too understood that the seeds of future freedom lay the people’s action, solidarity and non-violent resistance." Thank you on behalf of Munther Amira. #FreeMuntherAmira #FreePalestine
