While student safety online is important, the extreme filtering policies currently used in Weber School District have gone too far. Software like Blocksi has turned from a protective filter into a barrier to our education, blocking legitimate research, essential class resources, and invading student privacy.

Why This Is Harmful

• Interferes with Learning: Basic educational research is regularly blocked. When students attempt to research topics like cybersecurity or spyware for assignments, entire searches and legitimate news sources (like Wired magazine) are censored.
  Blocks Essential Class Tools: Coding platforms like OpenProcessing and CodeSandbox—vital tools used for coursework—have been completely blocked simply because students can create interactive projects on them.
• Violates Student Privacy: The filtering doesn't stop when the school day ends. Blocksi continues to track devices, monitor screens, and log student activity at home, even on non-school hours. Because students are required to use district-issued Chromebooks, there is zero expectation of personal privacy.
• Fails to Teach Digital Responsibility: Over-filtering doesn't teach self-discipline or focus; it forces students to spend time finding bypasses rather than engaging with their coursework.

We are calling on Weber School District administrators to:

• Re-evaluate and unblock essential educational and coding tools like OpenProcessing and CodeSandbox.
• Restrict invasive, 24/7 screen recording and tracking on home networks.
• Adjust keyword filters so students can conduct real academic research without constant blocks.
