The Issue

My dog almost became a victim in a situation that was beyond my control. Despite countless hours of training and seeking assistance from professional trainers, nothing seemed to work for him. The penultimate moment of distress was when his collar snapped as he attempted to chase sheep, putting him in the dangerous path of a potential gunshot. I am convinced that training with an electronic collar would have prevented this terrifying incident and kept him safe.

The recent ban on e collars in Wales overlooks the unique needs of many dogs and the limited effectiveness of traditional training methods for dogs with particular behavioural challenges. While the intention behind the ban might be to prevent animal cruelty, it inadvertently ignores those responsible pet owners who use e collars as a last resort to ensure the safety of their pets and the wider community.

Studies have shown that, when used responsibly, e collars can be an effective tool for managing certain behaviours and ensuring compliance in potentially dangerous situations. The primary function of these devices is not to punish, but to correct and guide behaviour safely, without inflicting harm. Many reputable trainers and organisations advocate for their use under professional guidance, which evidences their potential.

In the heart of Wales, we respect our farming communities and the need to protect livestock. However, we must also balance this with the need to protect our pets without resorting to harmful or ineffective measures. The true essence of responsible pet ownership lies in safeguarding our dogs' well-being while ensuring they do not pose a threat to others or themselves.

I urge the Welsh Government and decision-makers to reconsider this ban. By lifting the prohibition on e collars, we can create an environment where pets are safe and sound, and owners are confident in managing their dogs’ behaviours. Other regions have seen success with regulated e collar use, and Wales can too.

Please sign this petition to advocate for the right to choose effective and harmless training tools, ensuring our pets' utmost safety and preventing heart-wrenching scenarios like the one I faced. Together, let's work towards a more balanced and pet-friendly environment in Wales.
