Dear friends and supporters of the 2015/16 World Heritage Species initiative calling to the UN/UNESCO to establish a World Heritage Species PROGRAM under an expanded UNESCO mandate:
Your continued support is appreciated. It is terrific to see people from many countries around the world take note of the petition. Presently, we have confirmed support from at least the following countries:
Argentina, Austria, Australia, the Bahamas, Belgium, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Cape Verde, Columbia, The Cook Islands, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ethiopia, Egypt, Fiji, Finland, France, Guernsey, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungry, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Iceland, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Mozambique, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, Taiwan, Tanzania, Turkey, UAE, US, the United Kingdom, Uganda, Venezuela and Zimbabwe
It is important to remember that the World Heritage Species movement will benefit more species than lions. Cecil is our special mascot and inspiration. Out of the tragedy of his demise a movement was born. However, he shares his Kingdom with many emblematic species deserving a chance to survive the encroachment of human activity. The deep reaching essence of this initiative is the establishment of a World Heritage Species PROGRAM as an umbrella of protection over them all.
Lions are proposed in the petition as the first title holder of this new program only as a starting point – primarily to establish the program first and set up an appropriate protocol. Additional species can then be brought under the umbrella of the program. The call is to crown the King first and then take care of the rest of the Kingdom.
We are going after the big picture here!
Many fine efforts are taking place in the background as individuals find ways to create awareness of the petition. But more awareness and signatures are required. We have terrific geographic breadth – but we need more participation from every country around the world.
We believe that a vast number of good people around our shared planet would be glad to add their voice to the World Heritage Species call - if only they could be made aware of this initiative to protect our heritage animals. As such we thank you for your continued sharing, tweeting and any other means via which you generate awareness of this initiative - after all WE all are this call’s ambassadors.
Let’s all remember that there was a point in time when there was no World Heritage Sites. Now this fine and successful convention exists. We now need to do the same for our wildlife heritage – start a new global mechanism. Let' take Cecil the Lion to the UN on behalf of all our wildlife!
