The Issue

Firma y comparte. Cada apoyo acerca este reconocimiento.

PETITION
Addressed to: the United Nations (UN), the European Union, the Government of Spain, the Xunta de Galicia, and the rest of the competent administrations.

Housing and a dignified life are basic human rights, recognized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. There are open homes along the pilgrimage routes that work precisely to make them a reality. Work that turns what these declarations proclaim into reality cannot depend solely on the voluntary effort of human beings: it needs institutional support and recognition.

Who we are
A network of people in constant, lively pursuit of personal and collective growth, working to help make the world a true home for Life. In practice: homes or shelters along pilgrimage routes across the planet, where we offer shelter and food, and where we commit to learning to get along — not only among human beings, but also with every kind of animal, plant, mineral, air and water — and to freeing ourselves, step by step, from alcohol, tobacco, drugs and every kind of harmful addiction.

Our Experience, and the Urgent Need for New Legal Frameworks
From 2011 to 2018, those of us writing this lived at the San Martiño de Ozón monastery in Muxía, on the Iberian Peninsula, where we set up the Aurora de Buxán work cooperative — recognised, after many requests to the Xunta de Galicia, as a non-profit. The further requests asking for public-utility status were not granted. Even so, and with deep, genuine dedication, we always worked with our doors open to pilgrims on a donation basis, and also assisted anyone who arrived asking for help.

Despite favourable coverage from several media outlets and the value of our work being recognised by the local community, the lack of an adequate legal framework and of financial support forced us to put the cooperative to "sleep" and close the monastery's doors. Today, from the refuge Mi Mansión Perogrulla, on the Atlantic coast, on the pilgrimage route that connects Muxía with Fisterra, we continue this work, once again thanks to volunteers.

This experience has shown us that current legal structures don't always fit the reality of initiatives like ours. It is essential that new legal frameworks and types of entities be explored and created — ones that specifically recognise and support the value of this public-utility work, rather than trying to force it into pre-existing models that don't account for its nature and that, as we have found, prove insufficient.

What We Are Specifically Asking For
Specifically, we are requesting:

  1. The creation of mechanisms for financial support and official recognition for those of us who practise hospitality and welcome along the pilgrimage routes. This would make it possible to cover hospitaleros' basic needs and ensure these spaces remain sustainable, guaranteeing a "roof over one's head" both for those who offer it and those who receive it.
  2. The creation of new legal structures, or the adaptation of existing ones, allowing for a declaration of public utility for initiatives like ours — recognising their social and cultural value, and providing access to benefits such as tax-deductible donations and public funding.
  3. The transfer of closed or abandoned houses and churches, to be restored and opened as places of welcome along pilgrimage routes around the world.

Why sign?
Because this work has already proven its value over fifteen years and deserves to continue. And because recognising as being of public utility something that is, in fact, of service to sacred Life — and, indeed, of service to the public — is simply common sense.

Sign and share. Every signature brings this recognition closer.
