Demand Protection For a Mother of Five and Her Family
The Issue
My name is Niemat, and I’m the founder of Darfur Women Action Group. I need your help and your voice to save the lives of E.A.A.M. and her five children in Cairo. They have fled the Darfur genocide after long suffering and are now refugees in Egypt. In Egypt, they have suffered several attacks and live under the threat of being killed. Please read excerpts from E.A.A.M.'s open letter and sign this petition to help bring attention to their story.
My name is E.A.A.M and I am a mother of five who also takes care of my nephew, who has lived with me since he was a child. Since 2003, we have been through unimaginable suffering. We endured the genocide in Darfur. My husband was attacked and taken from our home by the militia (to this day, we still do not know his whereabouts). We finally fled to Egypt, seeking refuge and protection. We have been recognized as refugees by the UNHCR and are waiting to be relocated to another country where we can be permanently protected. Please sign this petition to help get protect our my family.
Since 2014, there have been a number of repeated violent attacks against my family, particularly my children and my nephew, perpetrated by local Egyptian residents of our Ains Shams neighborhood in Cairo, where we have lived as refugees for four years. None of these attacks have been provoked by us or are the result of any behavior on our part.
My children have been attacked while heading to school, on the way to the market, and even inside our residence. We have been subjected to all kinds of physical and psychological harm,as well as verbal and discriminatory insults based on our skin color. We have also been victims of financial exploitation. We’ve reported the incidents to police and all we’ve gotten is a file number — they have not investigated the attacks or held the adult attackers accountable. Just a few months ago, my children were held hostage and in August 2016, we were once again the victims of death threats in front of many passersby.
Finally, after repeated pleas to the UNHCR demanding protection, a lawyer was appointed to investigate our case. Since UNCHR opened the case, we’ve been constantly intimidated by our attackers. We are now under threat and we do not know what to do. Today I am fearful and terrified that I will lose my children because of these repeated attacks. I am a mother of five who has fled my homeland because of the ongoing crisis in Darfur, seeking protection for my children after their father went missing in Darfur. And now we are subjected to the same physical and psychological harm that we escaped in the first place.
We urgently need protection. Please sign this petition to help my family and I escape the threat of death as soon as possible.
Thank you,
E. A. A. M
