Fund and Mandate Unconscious Bias Training for UMass Engineering Students and Faculty

Fund and Mandate Unconscious Bias Training for UMass Engineering Students and Faculty

The Issue

We are calling upon UMass Engineering faculty, DEI committee members, and community members to fund and mandate unconscious bias training for undergraduates, graduates, and faculty in the College of Engineering.

Minority students in the College of Engineering have expressed that they experience racism and microaggressions on a regular basis from students and faculty in their classes. Unconscious bias training will help to address the discrimination caused by negative societal conditioning, allowing students and faculty to recognize their beliefs and change them.

As part of an institution with ample resources, we have the responsibility to educate future civil engineers about how to unlearn harmful unconscious and conscious biases.

Civil Engineering students and faculty have expressed a desire to reach a more balanced and inclusive environment and the College of Engineering should fund and mandate unconscious bias training to support our interest to create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

Sign this petition to show the UMass College of Engineering that engineering students are serious about our demand for unconscious bias training, that we stand with our peers, and are ready to unlearn bias that creates inequities in our learning environment and the entire engineering industry.
