The Issue

There is a perennially unoccupied plinth in Trafalgar Square, London ( called the "4th Plinth" ) which has, from time to time, works of art or other structures in situ there temporarily. This petition proposes that the 4th Plinth be dedicated to a permanent statue memorialising / commemorating William Wilberforce, (1759 - 1833 ), the great 19th Century campaigner against the international slave trade, who was a native of Hull and a Yorkshire MP for over 25 years. Due to his indefatigable efforts, the Slave Trade Abolition Act was passed by the British Parliament in 1807. This exemplary life's work, on behalf of the UK, and all humanity, deserves wide recognition, which a permanent statue on the technically "unoccupied" 4th Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London, will help to achieve.
