Rollout Cloth Nappy Voucher Schemes Nationwide

The Issue

Disposable nappies account for 2-3% of UK household waste, according to Wrap, a recycling charity. They also detail that the average child will go through 4000-6000 disposable nappies. According the the Environment Agency in 2008, this creates a whopping 1200lbs, or 570kg of carbon emissions.

Many councils in England are taking fabulous steps to help reduce this waste by running voucher schemes for reusable nappies. We would love for everybody in the UK to have access to such fantastic schemes, either through a national initiative, or rolled out through more councils.

How would such a scheme benefit parents and carers? A study by Real Nappies for London showed that over the course of time that a child is in nappies, utilising reusable nappies saves between £308-£488.

This not only benefits the environment, but councils too. According the Nappy Alliance, savings are quickly accumulated as consequence of the reduced disposal cost and landfill tax.
