In a rare move, Westminster Council ordered that the Carlton Tavern, destroyed overnight in 2015 by developers to prevent listing, must be rebuilt brick by brick. Work has now begun on site, and must be completed by July 2018. It's satisfying to know that in this instance the selfish and unscrupulous actions of this developer have backfired. But a reconstruction is never the same as the original, and if interim protection had been in place the Carlton Tavern would not have been bulldozed in the first place. We cannot wait another 10 years for this law to change.
