Ensure a second Wylfa isn't built and a clean energy solution takes it's place
The Issue
This Petition is to stop the construction of a second Wylfa power station. This power station would be constructed on the Isle of Anglesey, which is on Welsh soil, yet the decision process has been completely out of the hands of Wales, as we have no say in this matter, those in Westminster are deciding that for us. That's not a nationalist statement, that's a fact.
Wales is on it's way to powering itself exclusively by renewable and green energy, and nuclear power is the furthest thing from that. Where would the waste product go? It takes thousands of years to dispose of nuclear waste, will the waste of Wylfa B also end up on our beaches? It would be in the best interest of Wales to invest more in better, cleaner energy, as Wales has a brilliant potential for clean, safe energy using Water, Solar and Wind alone. These could generate a lot more jobs and income for Wales than the new Wylfa could ever do. As we all know, if it were to be built Wales wouldn't see a penny of the income produced by it.
It is clear that this project will have little economic effect for Anglesey, which is the lowest performing in Britain, despite having the original Wylfa for over 50 years. Westminster would reap the rewards from it, while Wales would gain nothing, except a radioactive plot of land after it's operational life comes to an end.
The project is also insanely expensive, to the point that it cannot find investors, even Hitachi have pulled out of this ill thought project, due to the increasing costs.
Would you really want this near your children? The German Government have conducted studies that point a significant increase in cancers in children under 5 years old living within 5 km of nuclear power plants. Or the fact that the tonnes of dangerous nuclear waste will be required to sit on the site for 160 years, due to the development of the second power station.
Wales doesn't need to use dangerous technologies form the cold war era, we need to use safe reliable technology form the present. As we must look toward the future, not the past. Do you really want another Chernobyl or Fukushima incident in Wales?
