As the 2024 US election approaches, Donald Trump’s campaign is increasingly based on a troubling mix of lies and misinformation. His constant stream of falsehoods isn’t just political bluster—it’s a direct threat to the truth and democracy across the world. It is a stark reminder why laws banning politicians from lying are so important.
Trump has escalated his attacks on Kamala Harris, by falsely accusing her of using artificial intelligence to fabricate crowds at her events. He even suggested that this supposed "election interference" should disqualify her from the race. These claims are, of course, baseless. Trump has also bizarrely insisted that his rally on January 6th, 2021, drew a larger crowd than Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1963 speech—an assertion easily disproved by the facts.
Trump’s dishonesty doesn’t stop there. He has shared digitally altered videos and false endorsements, further blurring the line between reality and fiction. In just one press conference, Trump made 162 false statements, including the claim that America’s strategic petroleum reserve is “virtually empty,” despite it holding hundreds of millions of barrels.
These are more than mere exaggerations; they are dangerous lies designed to stoke fear and division. Trump has falsely accused Democrats of supporting infanticide and claimed, without evidence, that illegal immigrants are being registered to vote. These falsehoods aim to erode public trust in the democratic process.
Perhaps the most concerning aspect of Trump’s approach is his creation of an alternate reality in which he alone determines what is true. By urging his followers to dismiss any evidence that contradicts him, Trump is laying the groundwork to reject the 2024 election results if he loses, just as he did in 2020.
For those of us watching from the UK, it’s clear that Trump’s relentless assault on the truth is not just a sign of a struggling campaign but a serious threat to global democracy. It shows us what happens when you don’t have laws in place to prevent influential candidates going off the rails spreading hate and fear through lies.
Now more than ever our own Government needs to pay attention to Trump’s lies. It needs to act fast and implement anti-lying legislation before we get our own homegrown Trump. British politics must not be swamped with lies like America, it's already full of too much deceit as it is.
