This election could be the nastiest to date.
As those of you who managed to listen to the radio documentary I made for BBC Radio 4 will have heard, the way we do politics is breaking our politicians and driving many out of politics altogether.
I’ve spent this Bank Holiday weekend hitting the airwaves again making the case for everyone to get the chance to vote. You can hear me here on Times Radio taking on Peter Hitchens and here on LBC calling for automatic voter registration.
Politics isn’t just debates and elections, it's about the future of our lives, our family’s lives and the futures of our community. It's no wonder that emotions are high, the stakes are high.
But as soon as we let nastiness and dishonesty cut into our politics we have failed. We deserve better.
Over the next six weeks, Compassion in Politics will be working round the clock to support candidates from every party to campaign with honesty, compassion and integrity.
A politics without compassion leads to cruel outcomes and avoidable suffering. And an election campaign conducted without integrity leads to a political space that is awash with dishonesty, toxicity and division.
Since we founded Compassion in Politics we’ve been working tirelessly to improve our democracy. We cannot let lies and hate seep still further into our politics.
We now have a limited window to push for still more progress.
This week, together with the Jo Cox Foundation, we will be launching our compassion and civility pledge. The more candidates we persuade to sign up, the more compassionate and honest this campaign will be.
Please help us to make a difference. Politics affects all our lives. We can’t let lies and hate poison this campaign.
This election will mark a significant turning point in the UK’s politics, especially with the polls suggesting the swing they are.
It could not be a more important moment to consider joining Compassion in Politics as a member. Part of the movement fighting for compassionate and honest politics.
If membership for you isn’t possible right now, for whatever reason that may be, a one off donation would be greatly appreciated. We need to be election fit and get on top of the lies and hate.
This election isn’t just about what happens on July 4th. Help us to ensure a more compassionate future for everyone,
Thank you,
Jennifer Nadel
