UK HMP system for recalled prisoners

The Issue

Do you have family, loved ones or friends in a UK prison on a recall or an IPP sentence?

If you answered yes, then we need your help!! Let's change the way people are recalled ,

Let’s get James Timpson to look at helping to get our friends and family, mums and dads parents and children reunited. (The new labour minister in charge of the UK prison system for the next four years.

James has been appointed by the new prime minister and is known for his business mindset and his advocacy reforming and assisting ex-offenders offering incentives and jobs.

We need signature’s so we can be heard in parliament and the government can look and hopefully revaluate the justice system recall and IPP prisoners. The prisons are bursting from the seams, but the low-level crimes and criminals are being kept, behind bars for simple errors, injustice and unfair recalls.

Recalled prisoners that haven’t got any charges or no further investigations shouldn’t be sitting inside taking spaces up, why if they have committed a lower-level crime, can’t they be given community service, or electronic monitoring.

Did you know as of September 2023 there was more than 12 thousand people are in prison on a recall. All because probation services are recalling low level offenders for things like

• Curfew

• Minor personal cannabis use

• Allegations that you have committed a crime or breech of licence (no evidence)

• Being late for an appointment (human error, transportation issues, mentally struggling)

• Being set unrealistic rules seem to be being set up to fail.

• Even being recalled for having to stay in hostels – with majority of people that don’t want to reform, people that know no difference and want to carry on committing crimes, addictions.

The prisons are crowded, and at capacity but there are 2,892 people on an IPP sentence – 10 years behind bar for a phone theft is ridiculous. Tariffs for 5/10 years is ridiculous.

Fast forward you’ve done your time for your original crime, you’ve reformed you have completed every single task and work that your offender manager have given you, you have a clean prison record, you have work inside the prison and have always been of good charismatic character, the peace maker.

Now Imagine trying your hardest to reform, to be a family man/woman and sort your life out. It’s easy for people that have never been to prison to say, “shouldn’t have committed the crime”. “ do the crime , do the time” , I get it but surly serious offenders shouldn’t be given the opportunity to be released 70 days early when you have people on. It's ripping families apart , parents being away from their kids missing out on huge parts of their life because of simple , low level and minor crimes that normally you wouldn't even get arrested for. It's cruel

a 3 year recall , for curfews, missing an appointment .

The two statements are correct, but have you made the wrong decision, or been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m not condoning criminal and illegal behaviour. I just think sometimes circumstances and situation and each case should be looked at individually rather than probation being able to just RECALL. Maybe if the recall system wasn’t how it is, probation recalling for the smallest things rather than working with the EX offender, MOST are trying to get their lives back on track, ex-offenders that have been in for a long period of time are getting used to the outside world, technology , family, mental health, money worries then there wouldn’t be as many people being recalled, and would be more spaces in prisons for serious offenders and serious Re offenders.

Being recalled for a minor offence E,g. late curfew ( this could of been any case or circumstance be because there was a crash on the motorway on the way home, or you helped an old lady that fell and hit her head, or your poorly mum needed help up the stairs,  or poor behaviour , or  you smoked and was caught with a tiny amount of cannabis  , but you only started smoking since being out of prison because of the flash backs , panic attacks or serious anxiety you have suffered since being released from prison.

What can £5.40 buy you now? July 2024…

• Pint of milk, bread and maybe a bar of chocolate.

Do you know what else costs £5.40?

One hour in a prison cell for a low level criminal, x 24 hours = £129.70 per day

£129.70per day x average 30 days per month = £3,891 per month

£3891 x 12 months = £46,692

33 months on a recall for a curfew and a 2 joints and its cost so far and still going up by the day - £128,403

Please someone look into this its cruel, inhumane and actually heart-breaking to see family going through the anguish and separation from their loved ones. For simple small

human errors.

Yours sincerely
