Government to Ban Clubs from Super League
The Issue
The proposed European Super League threatens to destroy football as we know it. A small group of elitist clubs plan to break away and form their own "Super League," which they could not be relegated from and would earn £300m per year from.
This goes against all the principles of competition and fairness on which our game is based and will do irreparable damage to the clubs and leagues left behind.
The UK Government should legislate to ban English clubs from joining this break-away league. Warm words or official statements are not enough, government must act with emergency legislation that makes it illegal for English clubs to join the proposed league.
The clubs in question have acted with total contempt for their fans and are motivated purely by greed.
If allowed to go ahead, the proposed super league would tear away the fabric of our game at the grassroots. The current structure of the game through which funds are distributed downwards throughout the leagues and clubs would be upended.
There would be an even greater wealth gap between the clubs involved in the proposed league and the rest, damaging the competitive nature of our sport.
International competitions would also be affected, with players banned from competing in World Cups and European Championships.
With no relegation from the proposed super league, it damages the idea of fair competition on which football has always been based.
The government must act swiftly and comprehensively to ban English clubs from participating in the super league and should implement wider reforms including an independent regulator and a review of the ownership structure of football clubs.
